Mute The Distraction

The word distraction is defined as: A thing that prevents someone from giving full attention to something else or extreme agitation of the mind or emotions.

If you're an NBA fan then you know playoff basketball is the highest level of competition that requires all of your attention. The best of the best have been on record talking about how they block out all distractions to give the playoffs their attention by cutting out social media and reverting their focus to where its needed most.

The same needs to be said for us who are trying to focus on our playoff run in searching and seizing our relationship for God. It starts by giving Him all of your attention. Even blocking out distractions of things that you love the most. The things that don't seem to be distractions.

Proverbs 4:25-27 says "Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; remove your foot from evil". In other words, stay locked in to the task at hand. If you're searching for God, you should be doing the things of God without distraction.

What I've learned about my own journey is that distractions are plentiful. They are not just those of evil, but ANYTHING that keeps your attention away from God and what He is calling you to do. I've spent countless hours on Facebook and Twitter just scrolling. Nothing is wrong with that, but I could've been doing something much more meaningful with that time.

The things we see on social media can be beautiful. We can get caught up in just watching instead of participating in our own journeys. A distraction from watering your seed (relationship) with God is one that will knock you off your destined course. Trying to be like what we see on social media can cause us to conform into something that we were never meant to be. Then once we realize it, we have to adjust and then we start to feel "behind" or ask ourselves "how did I get here". The answer is simple, the distraction was how.

Gods word says: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect" (Romans 12:2). So as the NBA players lock in to what's most important to them in that time, you should do the same. If developing your relationship with God is the most important thing to you, treat it as such.

Don't worry about what's going on with the latest on Twitter and Facebook. Focus on God and His word. Block out getting the likes and comments. If you need to, disable the notifications so it's out of sight. If thats not enough, delete the apps. It's okay to be disconnected from the world as long as you're connected with God. It will give you the opportunity to think clearly (renewing of the mind) and discern what is the will of God for you. Don't be afraid to mute the distractions.
